What is a domain name?

What it is

A domain name is the address of your presence on the Internet: for example mycompany.ch. It serves two purposes: displaying your website (www.mycompany.ch) and creating your professional emails (contact@mycompany.ch).

How it works

When someone types your domain, the Internet looks up the DNS (the directory of domains) to find out where your site and emails are located. You manage these DNS settings from your client area.

Choosing well

  • The extension: .ch for Switzerland, .com for international, etc.
  • Short and memorable: avoid unnecessary hyphens and numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I own the domain? Yes, you are the holder as long as you renew it. That's why automatic renewal is recommended.
